Insane Flash bashing continues
Friday, October 24, 2008
I was reading about Firefox Minefield, appreciating how quick it's javascript engine is supposed to be, etc. However, getting into the comments, someone left this:
Um...is it just me, or did you forget to mention two very important factors regarding minefield? Don't get me wrong, I have been using it for a few days now, and I think it's amazing! It's just that you might want to mention to people that it's a 64 bit browser, and is intended for use with 64 bit operating systems to see it's full power. Also, there's that highly annoying fact that you can't run Flash on it because there's no Flash Player plugin for 64 bit browsers. Gotta love when Adobe just ignores everyone on the planet and charges us $2500 for the same software we bought 18 months ago, and all they did was rearrange the icons.
Which was replied to with this:
You nailed it on several points, especially the Adobe factor.
Now, defending Flash against some kind of assault based on tangible, authentic concerns is one thing... and should be taken up by those of us in the community and at Adobe itself. But ripping Flash with some baseless generalizations just becomes an annoying thing. Maybe I shouldn't even bother posting this.

John Dowdell said...“I caught Tinic in the lunchroom yesterday, and asked him whether those Minefield benchmarks were actually running in 64-bit. (The Mozilla JS speedup is based on Tamarin, and that's where most of the 64-bit conversion is happening.)
I came away with the sense that it was still 32-bit by default... that there was a reporting error in the original story. I didn't pursue it in weblogs, though, because I couldn't find clear evidence already in the public record.
Appreciate the report that it got on your radar too, Eric. I'll look into it more today, see if I can do something.
In the meantime, don't let the bigots get you down... history's running against 'em. ;-)
