Netflix chooses Silverlight for Macs for "watch instantly"

Monday, October 27, 2008

I have seen Silverlight make inroads mainly only in the area of web video at the moment, but here is something.
“Silverlight with Play Ready offers a powerful and secure toolkit for delivery of dynamic streaming, which offers faster start-up, and higher quality video, adapted in real time to users’ connection speeds,” said Netflix Chief Product Officer Neil Hunt. “Members who enjoy watching movies and TV episodes from the growing library of choices that can be instantly streamed at Netflix will be thrilled with this next generation improvement of access and quality, on a broader range of platforms, including Intel Macs and Firefox.”
I still see tons more Flash video online, but I am seeing more and more video pumping through Silverlight. It seems that some prefer it's streaming capabilities and it's Play Ready DRM technology.

I usually bash Silverlight and Microsoft, but I have to admit that the video aspects of Silverlight I have found to work nicely. The rest of it still pretty much sucks in my opinion. Hopefully that will come along too someday.

“Seems that some prefer the buckets of cash the Microsoft dumps on their lawns more than the technology. You'd be surprised.

If they were truly based on startup times they'd be looking at Move Networks. There are downsides to it to though.

There is a video war going on again that hasn't been seen since 2000. It's good though since it's causing competition and progression.”

“I completely forgot about Microsoft laying down cases of cash to get their technology used.

You'd have to admit though, even when getting paid a large sum of money, to put your eggs into a basket that might break your eggs is still a risk to take.

I agree about the competition -- it's only going to benefit developers with good options and users with better user experiences.”
