Illustrator opacity mask, make it go away

Monday, November 19, 2007

Adobe, one can create gradients in Flash and Fireworks where one of the colors can have transparency. Illustrator provides a workaround, but can't it be the same for you too? It's much more intuitive in Flash for my tastes.

“Er... NO

AI should have a tool ala InDesign CS3 for quick transparencies (not to mention the ability to make gradient stops transparent) but the opacity mask is a feature, not a workaround, and a very powerful one.

Try using a mesh with black and white points as an opacity mask and you'll see what I mean.”

“I see your point, I shouldn't have said make it go away. However allow us an easy method to achieve similar results. Gradient stop transparencies is what I'm after.”

“I know what you mean, Eric. After CS3 was released, I figured I would give Illustrator another go. I used to use PS & AI all the time (probably for about 6 years) until I moved to Fireworks. So I jumped back on Illustrator and immediately started to work like I do in Fireworks.. and then hit the gradients. I got so aggravated that I went back to Fireworks the next day.

Until Adobe provides transparency gradient stops for Illustrator, I just can't see using it for Flash or Flex work.”
