9/11

Friday, September 11, 2009

Almighty God, the past year will be indelibly inscribed in our memories.
We looked with horror on the terrorist attacks of last September 11th.
But we looked with honor on acts of courage by ordinary people
who sacrificed themselves to prevent further death and destruction.

We shed our tears in a common bond of grief for those we loved and lost.
We journeyed through a dark valley, but your light has led us to a place of hope.
You have turned our grief into determination.
We are resolved to do what is good, and right, and just.

Help us to remember what it means to be Americans—
a people endowed with abundant blessings.
Help us to cherish the freedoms we enjoy and inspire us to stand
with courage, united as one Nation in the midst of any adversity.

Lord, hear this prayer for our Nation. Amen.

- A U.S. Navy Chaplain

“I join you in prayer to all those who died in the 9/11 terrorists attacks and all those dying for no reasons at all just because they were at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Peace...”

“Those "acts of courage by ordinary people" really were amazing. I was privileged to be working at an elementary school just up Columbia Pike from the Pentagon on 9 11- we were in hearing distance of the explosion.

The way that our staff spontaneously rose to the occasion by making students feel safe and reassuring the parents who came streaming in was inspiring. Nobody knew just what was going on, only that DC as well as New York was under some sort of attack, but you could tell that the teachers would have stayed focused on our kids even if the walls had started crumbling down.”
